SHREVEPORT, La. — A Shreveport city councilman facing voters this week is in the hospital, but his campaign says his candidacy is staying put for Tuesday’s election in Shreveport, La.

Dr. Alan Jackson, who holds the District E seat on the Shreveport City Council, is hospitalized and getting treatment, his campaign said Sunday in a statement that was also posted to his official Facebook page.

The campaign gave no details about what sent Jackson to the hospital, and it did not describe how he is doing.

In the message, Jackson thanked residents for their prayers and their support while he recovers. He also made it plain he is not dropping out. He is still running for another term on the Nov. 3 ballot, and he urged people who live in District E to turn out and vote.

His family has asked for privacy for now. The campaign said it will share more news on his health when the time is right.

Jackson, a Democrat, is in a three-way race. Two other Democrats, Francine Monro Brown and Alvin Oliver, are challenging him for the District E seat.

He first joined the council by appointment. Then-Gov. John Bel Edwards picked him to fill the District E seat late in 2021, in December, and a year later voters gave Jackson a full term of his own when he won the December 2022 runoff.

He picked up support across party lines in the final stretch of the campaign. The outgoing councilman from neighboring District D, a Republican who has held that seat since 2018, endorsed Jackson for another term, pointing to his experience and his commitment to Shreveport.
