West Virginia Mountaineers and LSU Tigers in action at a Super Regional baseball game.

News Summary

The West Virginia Mountaineers are gearing up to face the LSU Tigers in a crucial Super Regional series at Alex Box Stadium. This match is significant as it’s West Virginia’s second consecutive NCAA baseball tournament appearance. LSU, coming off a victory against Arkansas, seeks to continue their successful run, while the Mountaineers, boasting a solid record, are ready to take on the challenge. Both teams aim to clinch a spot in the College World Series, with high stakes on the line in this pivotal matchup.

BATON ROUGE, LA – The West Virginia Mountaineers are set to face off against the LSU Tigers in a highly anticipated Super Regional series at Alex Box Stadium, starting on Saturday, June 7, at 2 p.m. ET. This matchup is particularly significant as it marks the second consecutive year that West Virginia has reached this stage of the NCAA baseball tournament, as well as only the second time in the program’s history.

LSU, fresh off securing a 10-6 victory against Arkansas to confirm West Virginia as its opponent, is looking to extend its successful tournament run. This matchup will be the 17th Super Regional appearance for LSU since the format was adopted in 1999 and follows their win of the seventh National Championship title in 2023.

During regional play, LSU faced considerable challenges. The Tigers began the tournament with two consecutive shutouts against Little Rock and Dallas Baptist but encountered a setback when they lost to the Spartans 10-4. This defeat forced them into a critical winner-take-all game, where LSU found itself trailing 5-1 at one point before ultimately securing the victory.

West Virginia enters the series with a strong record of 44-14 and will be looking to capitalize on their recent experiences with high-pressure games. Head coach Steve Sabins expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities, noting that the Mountaineers believe they can compete with any team they face.

The Mountaineers will contend with an intimidating atmosphere at Alex Box Stadium, which boasts a seating capacity of approximately 12,000. The venue is known for being one of the most challenging ballparks in college baseball, a fact the Mountaineers are reminded of as they prepare for their Super Regional appearance.

This season, West Virginia has shown resilience, particularly in their memorable matchup against Clemson, where they triumphed 9-6 after navigating a tense ninth inning with bases loaded. This experience may serve them well against LSU’s formidable pitching staff, which features top prospects Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson.

Kade Anderson holds a 9-1 record with an impressive 3.28 ERA, leading the nation with 156 strikeouts over 96 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Anthony Eyanson boasts a 10-2 record and a 2.50 ERA, ranking third nationally with 135 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings. Competing against such elite pitchers will be a significant challenge for the Mountaineers’ lineup.

Injuries have briefly impacted the Mountaineers as well. Players Sam White and Brodie Kresser both sustained injuries from getting hit by pitches in recent games but are expected to recover without long-term consequences. White suffers from a severe bruise comparable to the size of a softball on his ribs, while Kresser’s injury involves his kneecap. The team is following a recovery protocol similar to the one employed ahead of their recent trip to Clemson, which includes treatments involving hot tubs and ice tubs for the injured players.

The upcoming series against LSU asserts itself as a critical moment for West Virginia baseball, with the potential to advance further in the prestigious NCAA tournament hanging in the balance. The games will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2, allowing fans to follow the competition closely as these two teams battle for a place in the coveted College World Series.

As the Mountaineers prepare for this high-stakes series, they remain focused on the goal ahead, eager to showcase their talent against a storied program like LSU.
