40 students recognized for completing the inaugural Greater Shreveport Youth Leadership Program, enhancing their leadership skills.
Shreveport, Louisiana – A recognition ceremony held on Wednesday honored 40 high school students for their successful completion of the inaugural Greater Shreveport Youth Leadership Program. This program was a collaborative effort between the Greater Shreveport Chamber and Caddo Parish Public Schools, focusing on the development of future community and business leaders.
The ceremony took place at the Petroleum Club, celebrating the hard work and dedication of the students who participated throughout the school year. The program, which began in September and lasted for one year, provided an immersive experience for juniors and seniors to strengthen their leadership skills.
Students were chosen for the program based on recommendations from officials within their respective schools and the district. The individuals recognized came from various high schools, including Booker T. Washington, C.E. Byrd, Caddo Magnet, Caddo Virtual Academy, Captain Shreve, Green Oaks Academy, Huntington, North Caddo High, Northwood, Southwood, and Woodlawn High Schools. Among those celebrated were students such as MaKayla Hopkins, Ellissa Bryant, Micah Brannigan, Hannah Clarke, and Ian Anthony.
The Youth Leadership Program aimed to enrich students’ understanding of their community and encourage their active participation in its development. Keith Burton, the Superintendent of Caddo Parish Public Schools, emphasized the significance of this initiative, allowing students to explore opportunities for contributing positively to their community.
Modeled after the adult Greater Shreveport Leadership Program, which has been operating since 1977, the Youth Leadership Program immersed students in nine day-long experiences covering vital areas such as local history, government, media, healthcare, and education. These hands-on activities included visits to Barksdale Air Force Base, meetings with elected officials in Baton Rouge, and sessions focused on career exploration with local leaders. These experiences served to not only educate the students but also inspire them to become proactive contributors to regional growth.
Dr. Tim Magner, President of the Greater Shreveport Chamber, remarked on the program’s goal of inspiring students to engage with and contribute to their community, helping to unlock their potential as future leaders. The initiative is seen as a critical stepping stone for young individuals eager to make an impact in Shreveport and its surrounding areas.
The successful completion of the inaugural Youth Leadership Program marks a significant milestone for both the students and the Greater Shreveport community. As these high school participants move forward, they are expected to carry the lessons learned into their futures, promoting leadership and civic involvement wherever their paths may lead.
