This charming event, which takes place every year following Black Friday, is a wonderful opportunity for residents to dive into their community while snagging some fantastic deals.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, shoppers collectively spent a whopping $17 billion at local businesses last year—an impressive figure that highlights the importance of supporting these cherished community staples. Since the holiday’s inception in 2010, total annual spending on Small Business Saturday has reached over $201 billion, benefiting the very heart of America: our small businesses.

Local business owners passionately advocate for shopping small, not just for the unique finds but also for the community impact it creates. Carrie Restel, owner of The Grove, located at 107 N. Spring Street, emphasizes that when you spend money at big-box retailers, it vanishes out of the community. In contrast, supporting independent shops means that every dollar goes right back into local initiatives.
“When you shop the little guys, all that money comes right back into the community,” Restel stated. The Grove features 54 vendors, each managing their own small business, and many of these businesses are instrumental sponsors of community events, ranging from school fundraisers to local charities.

JoBeth Sheppard, who owns both Parish Girls and Simply Chic at 6120 Line Avenue, expressed her gratitude for the surge of shoppers showing up to support them. “It’s truly exciting to see so many people come out,” she shared. “We’ve had a busy Black Friday, and we hope to see the same enthusiasm on Small Business Saturday.”
Sheppard reminded shoppers that every purchase contributes to local sports teams, schools, and charities. It’s not just a transaction; it’s an investment in the community’s well-being.

Justin Jahnke reminisced about visiting The Enchanted Garden at 2429 Line Avenue when he was a child, where the whimsical toys he bought became an essential part of his childhood. Now, as an adult, he still feels the magic each time he steps into the beloved shop.
Deb Cockrell, the owner of The Enchanted Garden for an astounding 44 years, shared that Small Business Saturday is a wonderful chance to show appreciation for loyal customers. “Our customers have become our friends, and that’s the best part of this holiday weekend. We get to see everyone,” she beamed.
