Shreveport to host a free school uniform giveaway to help families prepare for the school year.
Shreveport, LA is set to host the annual free school uniform giveaway organized by Maggie Lee’s Closet on Friday, July 25, 2025. The event will kick off at 5 p.m. at the Highland Center, located at 520 Olive St. This year marks the 13th anniversary of the event, which aims to help families in need prepare for the upcoming school year.
Over 200 new school uniform sets will be available for distribution during the event. The uniforms include khaki or navy shorts and white polo shirts. Families are encouraged to arrive early, as the uniforms will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
To receive the uniforms, adults must present a valid identification (I.D.), and children who will wear the uniforms must be present with them. No exceptions to this policy will be made to ensure all distribution criteria are followed.
The initiative is named in memory of Maggie Lee Hinson, the daughter of the program’s founder, who passed away in 2009. The giveaway is designed to honor her legacy of generosity and commitment to sharing love in tangible ways. Maggie Lee’s Closet continues this mission by providing school uniforms to families in the community.
In addition to the distribution event, there are opportunities for community members to contribute. Donations of new and gently used uniforms are welcomed, particularly those that children have outgrown. The Volunteers for Youth Justice (VYJ) will collect these donated uniforms to pass on to children in need. Donation bins are placed at several locations around Shreveport, including the Shreveport City Court and the Shreveport Police Department Headquarters.
Moreover, Sportspectrum is supporting the initiative by donating a portion of shoe sales from now until August 31 to help Maggie Lee’s Closet continue to provide uniforms.
This give-back effort is timely, as public schools in the region are preparing to resume classes shortly. Caddo Parish public schools will begin on August 13, while Bossier Parish public schools for grades 1-12 will start on August 7. Kindergarten classes in Bossier Parish will start on August 14, and Pre-K students will begin on August 21.
