News Summary
As severe weather approaches, Shreveport and surrounding areas are providing free sandbags to residents to help mitigate potential flooding. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch due to expected heavy rainfall ranging from 2 to 5 inches. Residents can collect sandbags from designated locations starting Tuesday, with limits on the number of bags per vehicle. Officials urge caution and safety during the storm, advising residents to prepare and prioritize safety measures when navigating flooded areas.
Shreveport residents, along with those in Bossier City, Caddo, Bossier, and DeSoto parishes, are being offered free sandbags ahead of severe weather anticipated next week. The measure comes as the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the area, which will remain in effect from 7 a.m. on Tuesday through 7 a.m. on Wednesday due to expected heavy rainfall.
Forecasts predict rainfall amounts ranging from 2 to 4 inches in the region, with some isolated areas possibly receiving over 5 inches. This severe weather poses a significant risk of flooding in certain zones, prompting local officials to take proactive steps to mitigate potential damages.
The City of Shreveport is facilitating the distribution of sandbags at its Streets and Drainage Warehouse, located at 3825 Mansfield Road. Residents can collect 15 sandbags per vehicle, with availability on a first come, first served basis. Sandbag collection is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Individuals must be responsible for loading and transporting the sandbags themselves, as delivery services are not provided.
In addition to Shreveport, Caddo Parish residents can obtain sandbags on Monday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 6, from the Caddo Parish Department of Public Works/Fleet Services, located at 1701 Monty Street. Similar to Shreveport, there is a limit of 15 bags per vehicle at these locations.
Bossier City is also participating in the sandbag distribution efforts, with free sandbags available at the public works complex at 3223 Old Shed Road. The hours for pickup are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a possibility of extended hours should the demand increase.
For those living in DeSoto Parish, sandbags can be collected at the Road Department located at 424 Liberty Lane in Grand Cane. Here, households are limited to 20 bags, and identification will be required to receive the sandbags.
Bossier Parish has also resumed sandbag pickup on Tuesday morning at designated sites for residents in that area. Information on specific pickup locations may be obtained locally, but residents are advised to act quickly due to the first come, first served nature of the distribution.
As severe weather approaches, residents are urged to be cautious and prioritize safety when navigating streets post-storm. Key safety measures include treating traffic lights as four-way stops, reducing driving speed, and avoiding flooded areas to prevent accidents and injuries.
For further information regarding sandbag availability, residents can contact the Shreveport Public Works Department at 318-673-6300. Local officials are committed to ensuring that residents in the affected areas have the resources necessary to protect their homes and safety during the anticipated severe weather.
