Shreveport Leaders Respond to Assassination Attempt Against Former President Trump
An Unprecedented Attack
Political figures in northwest Louisiana issued statements in response to the shocking assassination attempt on Former President Donald J. Trump on July 13. 20-year-old, Thomas Matthew Crooks, from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania allegedly shot Trump during a campaign rally, injuring his right ear and illegally taking the life of a bystander. Two other spectators were also seriously injured.
Quick Action from Secret Service
Secret Service agents heroically stopped the assailant minutes after the attempted assassination. According to Secret Service Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, Crooks fired multiple shots in the direction of the stage at around 6:15 p.m. CT. He had been stationed on a rooftop, over 100 yards from the rally site.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux publicly released a statement via email at 8:30 a.m. on July 14. He shared, “My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims of the senseless shooting yesterday evening. Our country should embrace love over hate and unity over division. There is no place for political violence in our country.“

Following closely at 10:30 a.m. on the same day, Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn Sr. made his sentiments known via the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. His statement read as follows: “Regardless of political differences, violence has no place in our society. In the wake of yesterday’s violent incident, I’m grateful that Former President Trump is safe. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the men and women who worked tirelessly to ensure his protection and the first responders who acted quickly during a time of crisis. We must acknowledge the tragic loss of life, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. May we find the courage to stand against violence and uphold the values of peace, respect, and compassion.”
