Shreveport Police Department Advances on New Substations
Progress At North and West Shreveport
SHREVEPORT, La. – Significant advancement has been made by the Shreveport Police Department (SPD) in its ongoing project to establish new substations across the city. Citizens of Shreveport are now able to observe their contributions from the 2021 bond in action as these substations gradually take shape.
The most notable progress has been made in North Shreveport, specifically on North Market Street. Here, a previously vacant building on the site allocated for one of the new substations is currently being leveled. This is an effort to begin construction on a clean canvas, with the foundations of the new substation set to begin after demolition is completed. In the words SPD’s Chief, Wayne Smith, “North Market is, moving along the way it was intended.”
Updates on West Substation
More progress can be witnessed on the proposed West substation, strategically located on the corner of Monkhouse and Interstate Drive. Smith went on to disclose that substantial steps are being taken towards commencing construction, including finalizing the design and blueprint of the substation. He revealed that the SPD is currently in the process of finalizing the construction documents required for the new build.
Locating the South Shreveport Substation
The SPD is also committed to setting up another substation in South Shreveport. However, the search for a suitable location continues. Efforts are ongoing from the police department to secure a suitable site for this project, considering various factors such as accessibility, visibility, and safety among others.
Central Headquarters Upgrade
In addition to these substations, the central SPD headquarters is set for an upgrade and a downsize. With a budget grant of $27 million from the 2021 bond, the design and planning process for these renovations is already underway.
Chief Smith affirmed his resolve to ensure all constructions are successfully implemented as planned. The new substations will certainly contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of the Shreveport Police Department, essentially enhancing the security of all Shreveport residents.
