Shreveport’s Heartwarming Holiday Effort: “Party With a Purpose” to Brighten Lives
As the holiday season approaches in Shreveport, there’s a special event that’s capturing the spirit of giving and hope. With around 1,000 homeless students enrolled in the Caddo Parish Public School system, the need for community support has never been greater. Fourteen years ago, Caddo School Board Member Dottie Bell, along with her friend Levada Palms, decided to take action, and thus the initiative “Party With a Purpose” was born.
A Unique Gathering with a Big Heart
What sets this gathering apart is its unique format—attendees purchase drinks and pay for refreshments, all the while supporting a wonderful cause. It’s a fun way to make a difference, and over the years, nearly $96,000 has been raised from this heartwarming party. This money has provided crucial support for homeless students in the region, including educational scholarships.
Team Efforts for a Brighter Christmas
This year, the efforts for the holiday season have taken a grand step forward. The party organizers have partnered with SporTran, who are working to “Stuff A Bus” with toys and essential items for the children. Together with the National PanHellenic Council-Shreveport Council and Sam’s Town, they are determined to make sure that every child in the homeless program has a Christmas to remember.
“But we can’t do it without your help,” Bell emphasized. “We want to make the holiday season much brighter for some incredible kids facing tough times.”
Personal Touch to a Community Cause
Bell is not just a spokesperson; she feels personally connected to the cause. She recalls a special story of a Huntington High School student who faced homelessness while excelling in her studies. “She had incredible grades, was inducted into the National Honors Society, and participated in the band,” said Bell. Thanks to the generous donors, this student received a scholarship and is now thriving at Jackson State University.

If you’re looking for a joyful night filled with community spirit, make sure to drop by Sam’s Town on December 13 from 5 p.m. to midnight. The event is free and welcoming, with attendees encouraged to “come and go as you please.” It’s a grand celebration where supporters are invited to bring checks or toys to brighten the holiday season for kids in need.

Last year, attendees brought in countless toys, making smiles shine on the faces of many children who often feel overlooked. This year, organizers are hoping for even more contributions. “Your donations will bring big smiles, joy, and a real sense of belonging to those who need it most this Christmas season,” said Bell passionately.

Checks can be made payable to the Caddo Parish School Board Homeless Department, and toys are always welcome. “Your continued support means the world to us and makes a real difference in supporting Caddo’s homeless students,” Bell expressed.
