Shreveport, Louisiana – The former General Motors (GM) plant in Shreveport is experiencing a significant revival, as SLB (previously known as Schlumberger) has expanded its operations within the facility. The revitalized site, now named the Shreveport Business Park, covers nearly 3.3 million square feet and will create over 700 jobs, exceeding its original commitment of 596 positions.

SLB’s new operations will focus on manufacturing advanced cooling and energy systems specifically for data centers, reflecting a growing demand for energy-efficient technology. Local leaders had anticipated this kind of growth when planning the site’s future, and the results are already demonstrating their foresight.

In addition to SLB, the former GM plant now hosts other businesses such as the U.S. Postal Service and Hyundai Glovis, which is responsible for automotive preparation work. This diversification of companies contributes to the site’s perception as a significant regional asset, branded as a “three-port business park.”

The ownership of the land remains with the Caddo Parish Commission, while a private real estate group, Industrial Realty Group (IRG), manages and leases the property. IRG retains the option to purchase the property, which was initiated during a period when the facility was largely vacant. Currently, approximately 2 to 2.5 million square feet of the facility have been leased, leaving about 700,000 to 1 million square feet still available for future tenants.

The Shreveport Business Park is equipped with essential industrial utilities, including adequate water and power capacity ideal for manufacturing purposes. Additionally, there is a nearby 950-acre industrial park in North Louisiana, known as Ward 2, recognized recently as a “Gold-Level Site” by CPKC, which adds to the area’s appeal.

Further developments in the region include the Libby Glass Plant near I-20, which is currently in the final due diligence phase for potential redevelopment. This indicates ongoing efforts to enhance industrial growth and economic activity in the area.

The Louisiana Economic Development (LED) agency announced SLB’s successful proposal to establish a facility in the former GM plant, with an objective of creating nearly 600 jobs over a three-year span. SLB has signed a seven-year lease agreement to occupy 1 million square feet of the plant, which has been vacant since its closure in 2012.

In support of this venture, Governor John Bel Edwards disclosed a performance-based grant of $4.5 million for SLB to assist with building improvements, contingent upon the company fulfilling its investment and employment targets. It is projected that SLB will invest approximately $18.5 million into the facility and generate an annual payroll exceeding $50 million

Estimates suggest that this project could yield a total of 1,345 jobs, consisting of 596 direct positions and an estimated 749 indirect jobs stemming from the deployment of SLB’s new operations. Full production is anticipated to reach capacity by the end of 2026, with renovations expected to conclude by early next year.

Recruitment for new positions is set to commence shortly, with a career fair scheduled for next month to attract potential applicants. SLB officials have highlighted the importance of local workforce development programs as critical components for the project’s success.

Local officials have heralded this deal as a significant milestone for economic growth and job creation in the Shreveport region. The collaboration among various local and state entities was essential in securing SLB’s operations at the former GM plant, showcasing the power of unified efforts in fostering economic development.
