Widespread Confusion Over Boil Advisory Alerts in Shreveport

News Summary

Residents in the Shreveport-Bossier area received erroneous emergency alerts regarding a boil advisory intended for a specific neighborhood. The advisory mistakenly reached individuals outside the affected area, leading to confusion and concern. The Bossier Parish Police Jury apologized for the technical error responsible for the misinformation. Officials are now focusing on refining their alert systems to prevent such occurrences in the future while underscoring the importance of accurate communication in public safety.

Shreveport – On Wednesday, July 9, just before 4 p.m., many residents in the Shreveport-Bossier area received emergency alerts related to a boil advisory. These alerts, resembling those typically dispatched for Amber Alerts or Tornado Warnings, stated that the Consolidated Waterworks District #1 service had been restored, but a boil advisory was now in effect for the affected area.

However, the alerts were mistakenly broadcast to a much wider audience than intended, causing confusion among residents who live outside the specific area impacted by the advisory. The boil advisory was meant to inform residents specifically on Highway 614 near Virginia, Stewart, Baker, and Sharon roads in the Haughton area, located just off I-20. Shortly after the initial alert, a follow-up notification clarified the advisory’s reach, instructing recipients that “a boil advisory is in effect for HWY614 from JS Lane north to I-20. All others disregard.”

Despite these clarifications, many residents received the alerts in areas such as Broadmoor, Springhill, Minden, Golden Meadows, Benton, Shreve City, and Bossier City. Some individuals as far away as Jefferson and Blevins, Texas, also reported receiving the alerts. Additionally, residents with private wells on their properties indicated that they too received the notifications, despite being outside the designated area of concern.

In response to the widespread confusion, the Bossier Parish Police Jury issued an apology approximately one hour after the alerts were sent out. The police jury explained that a technical error was responsible for the broader distribution of the alert, which inadvertently affected individuals who were not in the impacted area. They acknowledged the resulting confusion and concern among residents, stating that public safety remains their top priority.

The Bossier Parish government utilizes a communication system developed in partnership with a company called Everbridge to disseminate critical emergency and safety information to residents. This system is employed for a variety of alerts, including severe weather warnings, fire emergencies, flood notifications, boil advisories, and road closures. Residents are encouraged to sign up online to receive these alerts and stay informed about local safety measures.

Butch Ford, the parish administrator, emphasized the commitment to ensuring public safety by quickly disseminating vital information through the Everbridge system. The technical error that led to the erroneous communications highlights the challenges in managing public alerts and the importance of accurate targeting to avoid unnecessary alarm.

While the incidents of miscommunication were unfortunate, officials are working to refine their alert systems to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The focus remains on enhancing the effectiveness of emergency communication methods to keep the community informed and safe.
