Shreveport is set to host its 21st annual Back-to-School shoe and backpack giveaway on August 9. The event aims to provide essential school supplies to children in need, ensuring that they are prepared for the upcoming school year.

Registration for the giveaway is currently open and will close on Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Parents and guardians can sign up at one of three designated locations: 1827 Nelson St., 3709 Greenwood Road, and 6363 Hearne Avenue in Shreveport. To register, identification and proof of government assistance are required, and it is crucial for the child to be present at the giveaway event to receive the shoes and backpack.

The giveaway will occur at Walmart on Pines Road in Shreveport. Over the years, the event has grown, drawing support from local businesses and community groups who share a common goal of assisting families during a financially challenging time of year.

Barbara Norton, the event’s founder and coordinator for all 21 years, has played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of this community initiative. Local businesses have joined forces to run various back-to-school giveaway programs, amplifying the support available to families.

Recently, Rice and Kendig Injury Attorneys held a drive-through backpack giveaway that was met with enthusiasm, distributing backpacks to approximately 500 children. This initiative reflects the strong community spirit dedicated to helping students gear up for their education.

The Highland Center also hosted a successful back-to-school giveaway, collaborating with organizations such as Maggie Lee’s Closet and Sports Spectrum. Through this partnership, Maggie Lee’s Closet supplied 250 uniforms and accessories, while Sports Spectrum contributed 200 pairs of shoes. Parents attending these events expressed their gratitude for the support and resources made available to them.

In addition to the shoe and backpack giveaway, HealthCARE Express in Blanchard is organizing a back-to-school wellness event on the same day, August 9. This initiative offers school, sports, or camp physicals for a reduced rate of $30 with the donation of school supplies, a notable decrease from the regular physical price of $39. The donated supplies will be distributed to a local school selected by the clinic.

Furthermore, during the wellness event, an EKG can be performed for an additional charge of $75. HealthCARE Express is located at 4526 Northport Blvd, and registration for the wellness event is available online, although walk-ins are also welcome. School supply donations will be accepted throughout August, allowing continued support for the area’s educational needs.

This year’s back-to-school initiatives represent not only a significant commitment from individuals and organizations in Shreveport but also emphasize the importance of community support in helping children start the school year on the right foot. With multiple options available for families to receive school supplies and health services, the community showcases a strong dedication to education and the welfare of its youth.
