News Summary

A recent poverty simulation event hosted by the Community Development Institute at Bossier Parish Community College highlighted the struggles faced by families living in poverty. Participants engaged in realistic scenarios to understand the challenges of low-income households. The event emphasized the need for community collaboration to address poverty effectively and create supportive initiatives for those in need.

Shreveport-Bossier City recently hosted a poverty simulation aimed at shedding light on the challenges faced by individuals living below the poverty line. Organized by the Community Development Institute (CDI) for Louisiana at Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC), this event provided valuable insights into the complexities of poverty and how community initiatives can better support those affected.

The CDI is recognized as one of only seven national locations offering training in poverty simulation, with its Louisiana site established just last year. Under the leadership of director Jessica Hemingway, the organization aims to foster understanding among community leaders as they develop strategies for improvement. The organization stresses the importance of involving residents in the planning and execution of community successes.

The event incorporated a varied curriculum designed to engage participants with lectures, simulations, field trips, and group discussions, encouraging active learning. Volunteers took on specific roles, such as representing banks and grocery stores or acting as members of families enduring financial hardship.

During the simulation, one participant represented a 39-year-old mother of three, navigating life on a $9-an-hour salary at a hospital, while her husband faced unemployment. Each simulated month spanned approximately one hour, with each week condensed to 15 minutes. This provided participants with a taste of the relentless struggles families in similar real-life situations face.

Within this simulation, the mother worked for seven minutes, trying to balance her household responsibilities along with managing finances. Meanwhile, her husband took on childcare duties and searched for job opportunities, all while attempting to pay the family’s bills. Despite their involvement in the simulation, the Aber family experienced less financial turmoil compared to many others, who faced possible eviction and significant employment challenges.

Upon concluding the simulation, participants reflected on their experiences with Tabatha Duvall, the Assistant Director of the Center for Community and Economic Development at CDI. Many reported feelings of being overwhelmed, guilty, unsupported, and sad during the exercise. It became apparent that while assistance was accessible in the community, families were often too preoccupied with their immediate struggles to take advantage of available resources.

One of the retired participants even offered to babysit, highlighting a willingness to alleviate childcare pressures for others. A participant named Willie Henderson emphasized the importance of community solidarity, underscoring the need for collective efforts in the face of societal divisions.

The CDI’s training programs target a diverse array of community leaders, including elected officials, government employees, bankers, and nonprofit leaders. This poverty simulation serves not only as a training model but as a catalyst for fostering collaboration among various sectors of the community to build successful neighborhoods.

This event showcased the necessity of a collective response to challenges posed by poverty. By understanding the daily realities faced by vulnerable families, community leaders can craft more effective initiatives aimed at uplifting those in need and developing a more supportive environment for growth and sustainability.

In summary, the poverty simulation at BPCC proved significant in highlighting both the struggles faced by impoverished families and the potential for community collaboration to foster solutions. As residents engage with these important insights, there is hope for a more unified approach to tackling issues of poverty within the Shreveport-Bossier area.
