The $150 million funding from investors will boost scaling of their DAC technology. Bossier City, Louisiana – Heirloom Carbon Technologies, a San Francisco-based carbon technology firm, has announced plans to invest over $1 billion into two direct air capture (DAC) facilities at the Port of Caddo-Bossier. The company recently secured $150 million in funding from several prominent investors, including Japan Airlines, Mitsubishi Corp. (Americas), H&M Group, Siemens Financial Services, Ahren Innovation, and Carbon Direct Capital. This funding will allow Heirloom to scale its DAC technology rapidly, reduce costs, and develop additional projects, as well as access vital infrastructure capital.
Heirloom’s CEO noted the importance of making DAC affordable to encourage its widespread adoption and enable a significant impact on climate change. The first phase of these initiatives could remove around 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually upon completion. The initial facility is estimated to cost $475 million and will be privately funded. Meanwhile, the second facility is expected to cost around $550 million and will seek funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Project Cypress.
Together, the two proposed facilities are projected to become one of the largest DAC hubs globally, generating over 80 permanent jobs with an average salary exceeding $56,000. Additionally, the construction projects are anticipated to create 188 indirect jobs and nearly 1,000 temporary construction positions, according to the state’s economic development office.
Project Cypress, a collaboration involving Battelle, Climeworks, and Heirloom, is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Regional DAC Hubs program, which offers funding opportunities from a $603 million federal grant pool. As part of Heirloom’s expansion plans, a proposed $100 million DAC plant and a separate sequestration facility in Calcasieu Parish are expected to begin construction within this year, with full operations aimed for completion within five years.
Heirloom’s innovative carbon capture technology leverages limestone, effectively enhancing its natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide in less than three days. The company has already established carbon removal contracts with major global corporations, including Microsoft, Stripe, Meta, Shopify, JPMorgan, McKinsey, Workday, and Autodesk. The California facility, which began operations in November 2023, is the company’s only operational DAC plant, with an initial goal to remove 1,000 tons of carbon annually. The captured carbon at this site is permanently embedded in concrete for various construction applications.
The commitment from Heirloom Carbon Technologies to establish significant carbon capture facilities heralds a promising advancement in the fight against global climate change. By securing substantial funding and collaborating with governmental and private entities, the company is poised to play a critical role in the development and scalability of carbon capture technology, showcasing the potential for innovation to address one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
