House Speaker Mike Johnson Under Fire Over Proposed Foreign Aid Plan

House Speaker Mike Johnson of Shreveport, Louisiana, faces an increasing challenge to his position as key GOP figures express opposition to his job. A second Republican, Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky, has joined Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in supporting a motion which could see Johnson removed from his position.
This upheaval comes as Johnson unveils plans for funding assistance to US allies, notably Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine. The motion was shared by Massie on his X account, stating, “I just told Mike Johnson in conference that I’m co-sponsoring the Motion to Vacate that was introduced by @RepMTG.”
Democrat Support Needed for Foreign Aid Plan
As he seeks to enact this foreign aid approach, Speaker Johnson would need the backing of the Democrats. However, current GOP opposition points to increasing uncertainty on the matter.
Speaker Johnson and former President Donald Trump recently met in Florida, with Trump offering his support for Johnson’s leadership. Massie’s intention to co-sponsor the motion was rejected by some Republican colleagues at a GOP conference meeting, with this internal opposition suggesting a division within the party.
Johnson Resolute Amid Threats
In response to these threats, Johnson has reiterated his reluctance to step down. Speaking at a recent news conference, the Speaker described himself as a “wartime speaker” and maintained, “I am not resigning. I didn’t think this would be an easy path.”
Despite the internal opposition, Johnson has garnered support within the party. Majority Leader Steve Scalise stands with Johnson, providing a statement of affirmation, “History will judge us based on how we respond to moments like this.”
Foreign Aid Proposal Outlined
With escalation of Israel’s conflict with Iran last week, Johnson has made calls for American support for its allies. The funding plan outlined by Johnson would seek to strengthen US allies in the Indo-Pacific region, support Ukraine against Russian aggression, fund Israel, and support measures to counter adversaries and boost national security.
“As Israel faces this vicious attack from Iran, America must show our full resolve to stand with our critical ally,” said Johnson. “The world must be assured: Israel is not alone.”
