Constitution Day Celebration Coming to LSUS
In Shreveport, Louisiana, excitement is building as the campus of Louisiana State University in Shreveport (LSUS) gears up for a special **Constitution Day celebration** on September 17. This all-day event promises to engage and educate the community about the U.S. Constitution and why it remains a vital piece of our democratic fabric today.
What to Expect
From morning to evening, the festivities will be overflowing with activities and learning opportunities. The Noel Memorial Library will showcase exhibits featuring the U.S. Constitution on its first and third floors, an excellent chance for attendees to dive deep into the history and significance behind this essential document.
But that’s not all! For those eager to make their voices heard, there will be a voter registration drive happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Grab your friends and head over to the University Center Lobby, where you can easily register to vote right next to The Port Grille.
A Fun Twist with Hamilton Karaoke
And if you feel like showcasing some talent, don’t miss out on the Hamilton Karaoke session! This unique event will take place at 11 a.m. in The Port Grille, inviting participants to belt out their favorite tunes from the hit musical that brings history to life. It’s a delightful way to celebrate our nation’s Founding Fathers.
Speaking of food, the festivities continue at The Port Grille, where you can indulge in a delicious Founders Day Feast for just $9.95 per person. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy tasty dishes while celebrating with fellow community members. Also, make sure to visit STACKS in the Noel Memorial Library for free drinks and pretzel rods—who doesn’t love free snacks?
Get Involved with Student Government
For LSUS students looking to be more involved in their campus life, a student town hall titled Know Your Student Government Rights will take place at 2 p.m. in the Student Organization Lounge on the second floor of the University Center. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn about the rights and responsibilities that come with being a part of the university community.
Wrap Up with a Classic Film Screen
The day will culminate in a free screening of the classic film Citizen Kane at The Robinson Film Center at 6 p.m. This screening will not only entertain but educate as a panel of experts will lead a discussion on *freedom of the press*. The panel will explore the movie’s historical context and its relevance to today’s media landscape. Make sure to register beforehand, as seats are limited to just 45 in the theater!
Exciting Prizes and Online Participation
As an added bonus, those who participate in three events throughout the day and complete their bingo cards can qualify for some exciting prizes! Furthermore, for LSUS online students and community members unable to attend in person, there will be an interactive online trivia contest available, ensuring everyone has a chance to join in on the fun.
A Big Thank You
This celebration is made possible through a generous grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, which will support costs such as venue rentals, speaker honoraria, technical support, and promoting the events. This funding is instrumental in ensuring a memorable Constitution Day celebration for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader community.
Ashley Dean, assistant director of the strategy alternatives consortium at LSUS, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “The funding will allow us to create a dynamic and thought-provoking Constitution Day celebration that highlights the critical role of the press in our democracy.”
Mark Your Calendars!
Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to celebrate and learn about the U.S. Constitution! Whether you are a student, a member of the community, or just curious about American history, there’s something for everyone. Mark your calendars for September 17 and join in on the fun at LSUS!
