Linda McFarland Hamm, aged 76, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and community service. She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on July 20, 1948, and was a lifelong resident of the area. Growing up alongside her grandparents’ dairy farm, Linda had roots that trace back to first-generation immigrants from France. Her grandfather arrived through Ellis Island, while her grandmother entered through New Orleans.
Linda received her education at Catholic grammar schools and graduated from Saint Vincent Academy in 1966. After completing business school, she embarked on a career at a local bank. Her first marriage was to Fabe Moseley on November 14, 1968. Fabe worked in the family business, Harrison Paint Company, after attending Louisiana Tech University. They were active members of the First Methodist Church and participated in the Questers Sunday School class.
Sadly, Fabe battled Hodgkin’s disease for eight years and passed away on November 17, 1978. Following his death, Linda dedicated herself to working for pastor Jim Moore at the First Methodist Church. During this time, she connected with Bill Hamm, whose wife Sally had recently died as well. Their bond grew, leading to their marriage on September 29, 1979.
A passionate runner, Linda took up the sport primarily for stress relief and notably completed 20 major marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon three times and the London Marathon. In 1990, she also participated in the Goodwill Games. In addition to running, she competed in national triathlon championships held in Hilton Head, SC, in 1987 and was an accomplished equestrian, winning several local awards in dressage. Her commitment to helping others extended to her work with handicapped children and adults through the ARC of Caddo Bossier’s GREAT program, where she served for over 21 years.
Linda is survived by her husband, William Ellis Hamm, Sr., and their sons: Chris (Bridget), Billy, and Stephen (Heidi) Hamm. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Wimberly, Madison, Macy, Addison, William III, Sally Abigail, and Sarah Katherine Hamm. The list of pallbearers includes Michael Gilster, Jimmy Gosslee, Mark Florsheim, Dr. Jimmy Moss, Alvin Childs, and Don Johnson, with George McInnis and Bill Peatross serving as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, Linda’s family asks that memorial donations be made to The Bridge Alzheimer’s and Dementia nonprofit in Shreveport and Chrysalis Interventions. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Garden Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the dedicated caregivers who provided exceptional support, including Mary Stinson, Stacey Blakes, Nettie Boles Stens, and Vera Lang, as well as numerous church and community members.
