Shreveport, LA – Centenary College has announced the hiring of Hal Mumme as the new offensive coordinator for its football program, ahead of the 2025 season. The announcement came from David Orr, the college’s Director of Athletics and Recreation. This strategic move brings a wealth of experience to the Gents football staff, particularly as Mumme is known for being one of the originators of the innovative “Air Raid” offense.

Mumme will join head coach Byron Dawson’s staff, marking a significant addition as the team prepares for its upcoming season. Mumme’s reputation in the realm of college football is well-established, with over 40 years of coaching under his belt at various levels, from high school to NCAA Division I schools.

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Mumme has built an impressive resume throughout his coaching career. He began his journey in 1989 at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he recorded a 24-11 overall record and successfully led the team to the NAIA playoffs in 1991. Following that, he enjoyed a productive five-season tenure at Valdosta State University, amassing a 40-17-1 record and achieving two NCAA Division II playoff appearances.

In 1997, Mumme took the helm of the University of Kentucky football program, where he oversaw a period that resulted in 20 wins and two bowl game appearances over four seasons. His tenure at Kentucky is particularly noted for his work with quarterback Tim Couch, who went on to be a first-round NFL draft pick.

Mumme’s coaching journey includes roles at a variety of institutions, including Southeastern Louisiana, New Mexico State, McMurry University, and Belhaven University. In addition to college football, he has also contributed to professional leagues, serving as the offensive coordinator for the Memphis Express in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) and the Dallas Renegades in the XFL. Most recently, in April 2021, Mumme was appointed as the head coach of the Linemen in The Spring League, where he led the team to a Mega Bowl victory.

As the Centenary Gents football team gears up for the 2025 season, they will open with a game against Westgate Christian University on September 6 at Atkins Field. The season will consist of a nine-game regular schedule, featuring five home games and four road games. Notable matchups in the season include facing Millsaps College on September 13 and East Texas Baptist University on September 20, as well as several key conference games beginning with Austin College on October 4.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) will conclude its championship weekend on November 15 in Little Rock, Arkansas, with all six conference teams participating in games

With mumme’s vast experience and innovative offensive strategies, expectations are high for the Centenary Gents as they prepare for what hopes to be an exciting and successful 2025 football season. Fans can currently purchase season tickets and single-game tickets as the team approaches the kickoff of its campaign.
