SHREVEPORT, La. — Andrew Medlin, an English and philosophy teacher at Caddo Parish Magnet High School in Shreveport, got his turn behind a Jeopardy podium on Thursday.
Medlin built an early lead in the episode, helped by a daily double where he doubled his money. The returning champion recovered, though, and won a second straight game. His opponents were a Seattle product manager and a college chemistry professor whose home is Lexington Park, Maryland.
Before the second round, host Ken Jennings asked him about his reputation as the funny teacher at school. Medlin explained that he once bought a 1945 joke book at the Centenary Book Bazaar and still tries its old jokes on students, who do not always get them.
Outside the classroom, Medlin leads the gifted and talented department at Caddo Magnet and helps sponsor its Quiz Bowl team, which gives students a chance to test what they know against other schools, according to Caddo Parish Schools.
Caddo Parish Schools shared his background ahead of the broadcast, noting that Medlin has spent years helping students prepare for academic contests much like the one he faced on the show.
He has collected national honors along the way. A former student from his years at North Caddo Magnet High School put his name forward for the Yale Educator Award, which he received in 2019. In 2023, one of the nation’s Presidential Scholars singled him out as a distinguished teacher under the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
The episode aired locally Thursday afternoon at 4:30, giving Caddo students and staff a chance to watch one of their own teachers compete on one of the best-known quiz shows on television.
