Huntington High School Band Sets Sights on State Championship
SHREVEPORT, La. – In exciting news for music lovers and community supporters alike, the Huntington High School Band is gearing up for a thrilling debut at the LMEA State Marching Band competition in Lake Charles, Louisiana. This bright opportunity marks the first time a band from Northwest Louisiana will step onto this competitive stage, and you could feel the anticipation bubbling in the air when we spoke with their passionate band director, Roderick Jefferson, Ed.D.
A Special Representation
Jefferson shared his excitement, noting that they are the only band representing Shreveport. “We can play anything. And they call us the Radio Jukebox,” he said, with a grin. The stakes are high; if they win, they will wear the crown as the top show band in the state. And with their track record, it’s a chase that definitely seems within reach.
Growth and Community Spirit
Jefferson has dedicated his efforts to the band since 2011. Under his guidance, the program has experienced remarkable growth—from just 30 members a decade ago to a bustling ensemble of 120 students this year. “We got so many that we had to turn away because we didn’t have enough trombones, baritones, or trumpets,” Jefferson remarked, showcasing the flourishing nature of the band.
The students are vocal about the profound impact being part of the band has had on their lives. Senior McKenzie Bell, who plays the saxophone, expressed, “It gives me the right mind space from everything else that goes on.” Similarly, senior Jeremiah Moore, who has spent four years in the band, stated, “I’ve gained a lot of confidence in classrooms everywhere.” Their enthusiasm is contagious!
Consistent Victors
Jefferson was proud to highlight the band’s impressive history. “I don’t brag, but we’re the only marching band in all of Louisiana that has won first place and grand champion every year for 13 straight years since I’ve been here,” he said. It’s no surprise that this success brings a thrill comparable to being on a winning sports team. “We get to show everybody what we’re capable of,” Bell added, reflecting on the shared pride within the band.
Seeking Community Support
With the upcoming competition set for November 4, the excitement builds, but the band faces a hurdle in terms of financial support for transportation and lodging—costing roughly $7,000 for transportation and $5,000 for hotels. “Without community support, we don’t make the trip,” Jefferson shared, urging locals to rally behind their hopeful musicians.
Fundraising Efforts Underway
In response to the anticipated expenses, the band is actively conducting fundraisers with a goal of adding yet another state championship to their accolades. “And it’s a big deal because if we win our division, we will be crowned the top show band of Louisiana,” Jefferson reiterated, his enthusiasm palpable.
