News Summary

The Shreveport Fire Department introduces ‘Fire Prevention Friday’ to promote fire safety in schools with a focus on back-to-school safety this August.

Shreveport – The Shreveport Fire Department has launched a new initiative called “Fire Prevention Friday” to enhance fire safety awareness throughout the community. This ongoing campaign will feature a different fire safety topic each month, with August focusing specifically on back-to-school safety, providing critical tips for teachers, parents, and students as they begin the academic year.

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reveal concerning data about school fires in the United States. From 2014 to 2018, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 3,230 structure fires annually in schools, leading to an astounding $37 million in direct property damage each year. A significant number of these fires are attributed to arson, highlighting the pressing need for increased fire safety measures within educational environments.

To help mitigate risk, the Shreveport Fire Department recommends that teachers keep all classroom doors and at least one window easily accessible in the event of an emergency. Additionally, educators are encouraged to use UL or FM certified flame-retardant products for window treatments and decorations that could be combustible. The use of extension cords should be limited, and they should never be placed under rugs or along walls and ceilings, where they may create hazards.

In an effort to maintain safety within classrooms, the Fire Department also advises that artwork and teaching materials should not cover more than 20% of classroom wall space. Recognizing the importance of preparedness, schools are urged to familiarize their staff and students with emergency response protocols, fire evacuation procedures, and the locations of fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull stations. Clear hallways, stairways, and exits of any combustible items and storage is essential for ensuring safe evacuation paths.

To ensure readiness, the Fire Department recommends that schools conduct fire drills at least once a month. Each drill should be treated as a real emergency, engaging full participation from all teachers, students, and staff to cultivate a culture of safety and preparedness.

At home, families can take several proactive steps to enhance fire safety. The Fire Department strongly recommends installing smoke alarms near sleeping areas and on every level of the home. Monthly testing of these alarms is essential to ensure functionality and reliability. Furthermore, families should develop and regularly practice a comprehensive fire escape plan that includes multiple exit routes and a designated safe meeting place outside in the event of a fire.

Education is also crucial when it comes to children and cooking safety. The Fire Department stresses teaching kids safe cooking practices, especially when they are home alone. Families should encourage the use of microwaves, while also educating children on what items are unsafe to place in microwaves, such as metal. Children should also be taught to act immediately in the event of a fire, emphasizing prompt action and safety awareness.

The Shreveport Fire Department is dedicated to fostering a safe learning environment and ensuring a successful school year for all students. The community is encouraged to join in prioritizing fire prevention as a vital mission.
