Baton Rouge – The closing ceremony for the 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship at Louisiana State University (LSU) took place on July 25, 2025. This year, the fellowship celebrated a cohort of 24 young leaders from 18 sub-Saharan countries, marking another successful iteration of the program hosted by LSU for the second consecutive year.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is part of the U.S. government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), aimed at fostering leadership development, academic knowledge, and cultural exchange among young Africans. The 24 fellows, aged between 25 and 35, were selected from a pool of 58,000 applicants and engaged in specialized training and community service from mid-June until the end of July 2025.

During the ceremony, Hannah Sensenbrenner Morrow presented the program, while fellow Valerie Chingonzo from Zimbabwe also showcased her insights from the fellowship experience. Each fellow was recognized for their unique contributions during the program, emphasizing the interpersonal skills and community awareness they developed.

Oliver “Ozzie” Crocco, the administrative director, highlighted the fellows’ impactful work in Baton Rouge, commending their efforts in merging societal needs with their personal aspirations. This year’s program concluded with a graduation ceremony, celebrating the accomplishments of each participant.
