Police officers responding to a shooting in Shreveport.

News Summary

Shreveport witnessed a violent weekend with two separate shootings, resulting in one woman’s death and multiple serious injuries. The incidents highlight a worrying trend of escalating gun violence in the area. Police continue to investigate both cases, and authorities urge the community to confront the daunting issue of violence and domestic incidents. With one arrest made, the community is left grappling with the impact of these tragedies and the urgent need for effective interventions.

Shreveport experienced a violent weekend as two separate shootings unfolded, resulting in one woman’s death and several others sustaining serious injuries. The incidents showcase a concerning rise in gun violence in the area as authorities continue to investigate both cases.

The first shooting took place on Friday afternoon, July 4, around 2:20 p.m. on I-20 near the I-220 ramp. A 32-year-old woman was shot while driving, sustaining what are described as potentially life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately to address the situation. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. As of now, police have not released any information about a potential suspect related to this shooting. Approximately six units from the Shreveport Police Department responded to the scene, indicating the severity of the incident.

The following day, Saturday, July 5, officers received reports of another shooting at 7 a.m. near South Windermere Drive and Beaufort Way in a residential neighborhood of south Shreveport. Upon arrival, police found a male victim outside a home with a gunshot wound, while a female victim was discovered inside suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. This tragic incident involved multiple parties. The woman found inside the home was identified as 40-year-old Corinthian Shepard, who was pronounced dead at 7:09 a.m. The events leading up to her death involved a male suspect who shot her before reportedly either being shot by his son or turning the gun on himself.

Richard Williams has been arrested and charged with second-degree homicide concerning the death of Shepard. Meanwhile, the male victim, associated with the shooting, was transported to Oschner LSU Health Shreveport with life-threatening injuries but is currently in stable condition.

As of this weekend, the death of Corinthian Shepard marked the 19th homicide recorded in Shreveport this year. This news comes on the heels of another tragic event that occurred in Haynesville just days earlier on July 1. That shooting resulted in the death of 48-year-old Rochelle Lewis, who was shot by her husband, Shamarcus Lewis, at approximately 8:30 p.m. The shooting began after a 911 call was placed by their two teenagers, who reported that “Daddy had shot mama.” Rochelle Lewis succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, despite an active restraining order against Shamarcus at the time of the incident, which raises questions about domestic violence protections in the community.

The circumstances surrounding Shamarcus Lewis’s arrest also illustrate the dark reality of domestic violence. He was wearing an ankle monitor due to previous domestic violence-related charges and fled the scene following the shooting. Authorities pursued him in a police chase, which ended when he crashed his vehicle and subsequently shot himself in the head. He remains in critical condition at a Shreveport hospital, while their two teenagers are currently staying with relatives.

The incidents over the weekend underscore the growing concern over gun violence and domestic incidents in the Shreveport area. As authorities work to uncover more details and secure justice for the victims, community members are left grappling with the impact of these tragedies. The need for effective interventions and community support systems has never been more critical as the city faces this alarming trend in violence.
