SHREVEPORT, La. — Students in north Louisiana high schools and colleges who are thinking about careers in medicine can spend a day inside a working medical school when LSU Health Shreveport holds its annual Pre-Med Day on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Sessions run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the medical school in Shreveport. Registration closes Nov. 14, and students who need help with the cost can apply for scholarships that pay the fee. Organizers say space is limited.
Participants will move through hands-on stations run by medical students and health care professionals. Planned activities include airway management and intubation simulations, a look at how simulation tools and technology teach future doctors to read heartbeat patterns, and talks about what clinical work with real patients involves. Students will also get advice on preparing for medical school and on health care careers beyond becoming a physician, including physical therapy, osteopathic medicine and nurse practitioner roles.
The day is organized by S.H.I.P., a medical school program focused on humanitarian work abroad, and it doubles as a fundraiser. Money raised supports the group’s overseas medical outreach, including the Kabula Clinic in Kenya, where LSU Health Shreveport medical students treat patients in communities with limited access to care.
Medical students who will lead the stations said many young people interested in medicine do not have a doctor in the family to explain the path, and the event is meant to give them that kind of guidance while introducing them to the Shreveport campus.
