SHREVEPORT, La. — The Centenary College Choir takes the stage at First Baptist Church in Shreveport twice this weekend for Rhapsody in View, the program that anchors its concert year.
The first show starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, with a second at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The church sits at 543 Ockley St. downtown.
The choir has staged the show every year since 1949. The ensemble has also sung in more than 35 countries over its history.
Last fall the concert doubled as part of the college bicentennial. More than 200 former choir members returned to sing, and the evening introduced Labor Omnia Vincit, a bicentennial anthem written by Dr. James Eakin, who is both a Centenary graduate and a member of its faculty.
Adult tickets cost $15 and student tickets $10, while children too young for school get in at no charge. Seats can be bought from choir members, from members of the Downtown Shreveport Lions Club or by calling Centenary’s Hurley School of Music, 318-869-5235. Questions can go to [email protected].
The Lions Club is co-sponsoring both performances. Money raised goes to the club and its charity work as well as to the choir itself.
Centenary College, a private liberal arts school, has long tied its music program to community events in the city, and this concert is one of the most visible on its fall calendar each November.
For families looking for a weekend outing, the Sunday matinee gives an afternoon option, and the Saturday show fits neatly into an evening out in downtown Shreveport.
