SHREVEPORT, La. — Girls ages 9 to 14 and their parents can get straight answers about growing up at a free workshop that medical students at LSU Health Shreveport are planning for next month.

The Girls’ Puberty Workshop is set for Sunday, Nov. 15, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in Suite 2800 of the Center for Medical Education, 1365 Jennings St. There is no cost to attend, and the session is open to local families, not just those with ties to the medical school.

The campus chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association puts on the event each year. Organizers say the afternoon will cover the physical changes of puberty along with self-care, hygiene, body image and mental health. Families can also expect practical tips on nutrition, and girls who attend will go home with basic supplies. An optional session on sexual health will follow the main program for those who want it.

The workshop is built for both girls and the adults raising them. Its goal, organizers say, is to help young girls feel confident and in control as their bodies change, and to give parents a way to start conversations at home that can feel awkward.

The chapter was started in 2015 by a small group of students. Its members are medical students, residents and physicians at LSU Health Shreveport, and the group works on women’s health issues in the community as well as on support for women in medicine.

Families with questions can reach the organizers through the LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine website, which lists details on the event and how to sign up.
