SHREVEPORT, La. — Louisiana’s state fair is back in Shreveport for its 120th year, opening its gates Thursday with a full midway of rides, games and fair food, and it will stay open through Nov. 15.

Families from around Shreveport-Bossier were waiting at the entrance before opening. One headline attraction this year is the Freedom Wheel, a Ferris wheel that Talley Amusements, the midway operator, says was part of the July Fourth celebration in the nation’s capital before it was hauled to the fairgrounds. Funnel cakes, chicken on a stick and corn dogs were among the early crowd favorites.

The Shreveport Police Department is asking visitors to know the rules before they go. Starting at 6 p.m. each day, anyone younger than 18 has to come in with a parent, guardian or chaperone who is 21 or older. Bags must be clear, and planning ahead will speed up the line at the gate.

The banned list is long. Weapons are not allowed even for permit holders, with only credentialed officers exempt. Pets are out except for service animals and animals that are part of a show or staying in the campground. Also barred: fireworks and laser pointers, glass containers, hard coolers and aerosol cans, selfie sticks and flags on poles, and skateboards, bikes and skates. Outside alcohol cannot be brought in or consumed in the parking lots, and smoking or vaping is not allowed in buildings, ride lines, tents or livestock barns.

Clothing is expected to fit a family setting, and gang-related signs or symbols are prohibited. Breaking the rules can get a visitor removed with no refund and could lead to prosecution.
