SHREVEPORT, La. — Families in north Shreveport can collect Halloween candy from police officers, deputies and firefighters at a Halloween trunk or treat put on by local first responders Thursday evening, Oct. 29, an event billed as the North Shreveport Heroes night.

The free event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Roberts Center lot. The Roberts Center is at 1500 N. Market St. Organizers say it may wrap up sooner if the candy is gone before 7, so arriving early is the safer bet for families with small children.

Kids are encouraged to come in costume. First responders will line the lot with decorated vehicles and hand out treats, giving children a chance to meet the people who answer emergency calls in their neighborhoods.

Four groups of first responders are signed up: city police, deputies from the sheriff’s office for Caddo Parish, the Shreveport Fire Union and the office of the Shreveport City Marshal. The Shreveport Police Department is helping lead the effort. The North Shreveport Business Association is sponsoring the night.

Drivers should plan their approach before they leave home: the only way into the lot is by turning in from North Market Street while heading north, so anyone coming from the north will need to turn around and come back up the road.

The trunk or treat falls two days before Halloween, giving families an early, supervised option for gathering candy close to home on a weeknight. Costumes of every kind are welcome, whether superheroes or princesses, and the decorated cars and emergency vehicles will serve as candy stations for the evening. Parents can also use the time to let children meet and talk with the crews.
