SHREVEPORT, La. — The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office in Shreveport, La., has a new second-in-command for its jail operations. Four new deputies took the oath Monday, Oct. 26, before Sheriff Henry Whitehorn Sr., and one of them, Makesha Harris-Evans, takes over as assistant chief of detention.

Harris-Evans, who goes by Kesha, comes from across the Red River. She spent close to three decades with the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office, where she broke ground as the first African American woman to hold the ranks of captain and assistant chief.

Her hiring comes at a sensitive time for the Caddo jail. Only weeks ago, the sheriff’s office demoted its previous detention chief after an inmate, Tre’Veon Jackson, escaped from custody at a hospital and was later caught in Texas. A deputy was also fired after the escape.

Jackson slipped away during a medical transport late on Sept. 14. Eight days later, on Sept. 22, officers caught him at a Texas State Technical College campus in Marshall, Texas, after a search that drew in Marshall police, Harrison County deputies and the U.S. Marshals Service. He had been held on two second-degree murder counts and two attempted second-degree murder counts.

Three other deputies joined her at the ceremony. Cheryl Avery comes on in corrections as compliance coordinator, while Johnny Romero and Christopher Thompson are headed to patrol.

Caddo is also trying to fill other openings. The sheriff’s office is taking applications from people 21 and older for jail deputies, both registered and licensed practical nurses, workers to care for buildings and grounds, and part-time security officers at the courthouse. Details on pay, benefits and requirements are posted on the sheriff’s website.
